Ekeri calculates emissions within Scope 3
22.11.2024Since 2021, Ekeri has been calculating emissions according to the GHG Protocol’s Scope 1 and 2. Today, we can also report Scope 3 calculations for 2022: 29,470 tonnes of CO₂e.
Calculating emissions has been a natural part of Ekeri’s operations since 2021. In recent years, the company has continuously reduced emissions within Scopes 1 and 2, including direct emissions originating from the company and indirect emissions from the production of purchased energy.
At the beginning of 2022, Ekeri expanded its sustainability goals to include Scope 3 calculations, which cover additional indirect emissions from the supply chain, both before and after production.
Ekeri is ready for the big challenge
For most manufacturing companies, the largest emissions can be found in Scope 3, which is also true for Ekeri. Today, about 99% of Ekeri’s emissions come from Scope 3. Most of the Scope 3 emissions, about 90%, come from purchased materials. Materials such as steel and aluminium account for about 20,000 tonnes of CO₂e of these emissions.
“Reducing Scope 3 emissions is one of the biggest challenges we face. It won’t be easy, but we are working strategically and purposefully to meet these challenges,” says Daniel Asplund, Sustainability and After Sales Manager at Ekeri.
Transparency and credibility
A fundamental aspect of our emissions calculations is transparency and establishing a baseline year to measure progress towards our ultimate goal: being completely carbon neutral. For example, Ekeri’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions were calculated to be 169 tonnes of CO₂e in 2021. The results for 2022 and 2023 — 143 tonnes and 107 tonnes of CO₂e, respectively — confirm that the measures we have taken have had a positive impact and that we are on the right track.
These GHG Protocol calculations are challenging, which is why we have partnered with trusted collaborators to verify our calculations.
